Karen Khachanov asks Monte-Carlo Masters umpire cheeky question after Medvedev drama
Karen Khachanov had a question for Mohamed Lahyani after his run-in with Daniil Medvedev.
Karen Khachanov had a cheeky question for chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani after the official was involved in some drama with Daniil Medvedev. The world No. 3 kicked off in his last two matches, with Lahyani admitting to a mistake on a line call in Medvedev’s opener against Gael Monfils. Medvedev had another meltdown when he lost to Khachanov on Thursday.
Khachanov poked fun at the recent drama in Monte Carlo as he stepped on court for his quarter-final match on Friday. “You are focused also?” the 15th seed asked Lahyani as they prepared for the coin toss at the net.
The umpire had been involved in a dispute with Medvedev on Wednesday when he overruled a call and claimed one of Monfils’ shots was in. The Russian went on to get broken and let rip at the chair official during a changeover.
“It’s a freaking joke it’s out how did I lose the game when it’s out? It's out, it's out!” he screamed, also swearing in both English and his native Russian. Medvedev went on to win the match and he and Lahyani apologised to each other, with the umpire admitting that he was likely wrong over the earlier call.

“See, maybe I'm wrong,” Medvedev said of the call at 30-0, in much better spirits. “No I think you're right, the hawkeye showed that way,” Lahyani replied. And Khachanov wanted to make sure that the chair official was on top form after his blunder.
Khachanov also knew what it was like to be near the firing line during a Medvedev match as he defeated the world No. 4 on Thursday. During that match, Medvedev fumed over a line call that saw him get broken at 5-5 in the second set.
The 28-year-old tossed his racket before launching a scathing rant during the changeover and calling the supervisor. “Cedric, you go look at the mark. The mark is freaking out. They don't know how to referee anymore. The mark is out. Who will take action?” he raged.

Referring back to Lahyani’s mistake in his previous match, Medvedev added: “Yesterday, the ball is out, it's called in. Who will take action? This ball is out there. Who will take responsibility? It’s not my responsibility to referee the matches.”
While Khachanov was able to defeat Medvedev on Thursday, his run came to an end at the hands of Stefanos Tsitsipas who won their quarter-final clash 6-4 6-2.
