Antiques Roadshow guest gutted as he discovers '100 year old' vase is 'tea-stained' fake
Antiques Roadshow was back on Sunday and saw the experts valuing a number of interesting items.
Antiques Roadshow: Expert exposes pair of fake vases
Antiques Roadshow welcomed a guest who was not expecting to hear that their valuable items were not the real deal. During Sunday's episode of the BBC One show, expert John Sandon met with a gentleman who presented two vases to be valued.
Stating that he is a collector and a ceramist, the guest explained that he collects Irish ceramics and had delved into items from England by purchasing the two lilac vases.
"When I saw the name William Moorcroft, I thought 'Yeah, I'd like to get something that was quite old of his'", he said before adding: "I have a couple of new pieces which kind of 2004, whereas these, I thought were kind of around 1900, 1905."
John looked over the items and explained how rare it would be to find a matching pair in good condition and asked where they were purchased.
The guest went on to explain he had bought them from someone local selling their late uncle's collection.

"I drove down to Cork to meet him", he said, "But I ended up meeting in a car park, which I thought was a bit strange."
The guest confirmed he had paid £550 for the pair of vases before John told him the bad news.
"What worries me when you see them here is, are they too good to be true?", the expert said: "Because they would be 1905, so 110 or 120 years old.
"You're going to expect to see defects here and there, a bit of signs of crazing. Underneath there, smears of old, has that just been dipped in tea?"

He added how the signature on the bottom was a photograph copy.
"They're modern fakes, and therefore they're just pretty", John added as he confirmed the vases held no value while the guest looked on with a disappointed expression.
Antiques Roadshow viewers wasted no time in sharing their thoughts on the vases with one person writing: "Difficult to have much sympathy for that bloke who bought the vases from the back of a car #antiquesroadshow."
A second joked: "Didn’t that guy say he was a ceramics maker? Was there really a guy in a car park or were you just trying to see how well your ceramic making is?" (sic)
"And the lesson is...never buy your antiques from a bloke in a car park #antiquesroadshow", another cheekily added.
Antiques Roadshow is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
