Love Island: Jess and Sammy are announced as 2023 winners
Love Island winner Sammy Root has admitted that his ex-girlfriend Jess Harding "wasn't his style" after they were crowned champions of the ITV2 show last year. The pair went their separate ways after just two months outside the villa.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Sammy reflected on the valuable lessons he learned about himself and about relationships since he left the show. He shared that after the show he realised he "didn't have a type."
"I think I did learn that I'm very much more open to different types of girls. In the sense that I thought well, I did have a talk before I went in," he recalled.
"But it turned out that I ended up with someone that wasn't so much my style. So yeah, it made me realise that maybe I don't have a type."
Sammy also said that Love Island was "the best experience" and "couldn't have asked for it to go any better." The 22-year-old entered the villa on Day Four and made it all the way to the final where he was voted the winner with Jess.

Love Island All Stars has just landed on ITV, where a whole array of familiar contestants have returned to the villa in the hope of finding love again. When asked if he thought about giving Love Island a go again, Sammy didn't rule it out.
"I mean, for me, Love Island was literally the best experience of my life. I had so much fun. I couldn't have asked for it to go any better. So yeah, never say never. But at the same time, it's also very, very recent that I did just win it," he said.
Reflecting on whether he would change anything about his experience, Sammy added: "I'd be lying if I said I didn't make a couple mistakes. Try and maybe be like I said, a bit more careful about how I go about certain situations.

"But yeah, at the same time, when you're in there, it's a very overwhelming place. And yeah, I mean, you're never gonna get everything right. So as long as you're completely yourself and you own up to your mistakes. I think that's all you can really do."
The new series of Love Island All Stars have seen the likes of Georgia Harrison, Chris Taylor, Liberty Poole and Kaz Kamwi returning to the villa in a bid to find a second chance of romance.
Love Island: All Stars launched on Monday 15 January at 9pm on ITV.
